After an extremely busy week, with every team in qualifying tournaments,
the final rankings look little like those before them. But these
tournaments reveal a lot about a team, about who has the best shot at
state and who doesn't -- as unpredictable as the state tournament may
be.
One quick note: being eliminated this week in a district/league
tournament did not automatically eliminate a team from being in the
final rankings, which are always trying to judge the way a team played
all season while looking at its state potential. Feel free to mention
other notable seasons in the comments.
Class 4A
1. Richland 20-2
2. Tahoma (Maple Valley) 19-2
3. Puyallup 18-3
4. Lake Washington (Kirkland) 17-5
5. Snohomish 17-6
6. Kentwood (Covington) 17-3
7. Olympia 19-3
8. Marysville-Pilchuck 19-4
9. University (Spokane) 20-3
10. Southridge (Kennewick) 18-5
Other notable seasons: Emerald Ridge, Heritage, Inglemoor, Issaquah,
Kamiak, Kelso, Kennewick, Lewis & Clark, Newport, Redmond, South Kitsap
(and add Central Kitsap to that list as well).
Notes: Richland claimed the No. 1 seed in Eastern
Region, but there are still two more teams from East of the mountains
that need to clinch spots. University, Southridge, Lewis & Clark and
Kamiakin are all in the running ... If I had to pick a team outside of
Richland to win the tournament today, I'd go with the defending champs,
Snohomish. One simple reason: pitching. ... Lake Washington has plenty
of speed; just ask Newport, which watched the Kangs steal seven bases in
the KingCo 4A championship ... Speaking of the KingCo 4A, it really
showed its depth by having Inglemoor and Issaquah -- too
middle-of-the-pack teams in the league this season -- beat the top two
teams from the Vancouver area ... Few expected Kentwood to get this far,
but after beating Olympia, there's no doubt the Conks are for real.
Class 3A
1. Timberline (Lacey) 21-2
2. Bishop Blanchet 19-4
3. Liberty (Issaquah) 19-4
4. Columbia River (Vancouver) 17-5
5. Bellevue 16-6
6. North Kitsap (Poulsbo) 15-5
7. Mt. Rainier (Des Moines) 20-5
8. O'Dea 14-7
9. Bainbridge 16-7
10. Eastside Catholic (Sammamish) 16-6
Other notable seasons: Auburn Mountainview, Franklin Pierce,
Hanford, Highline, Lynnwood, Mount Si, West Seattle, West Valley
(Yakima).
Notes: Timberline takes the top spot for the first time
this season, and after going undefeated in the humongous West Central
District 3A tournament, the Blazers definitely deserve it ... Someone is
going to have to quiet the Bishop Blanchet lineup, which is strong from
front to back but especially in the middle, with junior Josh Sale now at
13 home runs in 23 games ... Bellevue not only won the KingCo 3A with an
eight-inning win against Liberty, it clinched a spot to play its state
games just down the road at Bannerwood Park ...Bainbridge senior Colin
Feldtman will be one of the hardest pitchers to stop in this tournament
... One question I kept asking myself: Is Eastside Catholic, which was
eliminated on two close losses in the Metro tourney, one of the state's
top 10 teams. I answered yes every time.
